GitHub Agentic Workflows reaches general availability

GitHub Agentic Workflows, an open source project from GitHub Next, became generally available on October 28, 2026, GitHub announced. It lets teams automate reasoning-based tasks such as issue triage, CI failure analysis, documentation updates and test writing with coding agents running inside GitHub Actions.

A workflow is written as a natural language Markdown file. The tool compiles it into standard Actions YAML, so it runs on a team's existing runner groups under existing policy constraints. Teams can use GitHub Copilot or bring their own coding agent to power each workflow.

The safeguards are layered. Agents access GitHub content under integrity filter rules, run with read-only permissions by default and execute inside a sandboxed container behind the Agent Workflow Firewall. Their outputs pass through a "safe outputs" validation step, and a dedicated threat detection job scans every proposed change before it is applied. New for general availability, agents can run in Cloud Hypervisor or NVX micro-VMs, and enclaves prevent data leaks in workflows that span repositories.

Other additions since the public preview: support for self-hosted Actions Runner Controller runners with Docker-in-Docker; the gh aw forecast command, no longer experimental, which now includes threat detection credits and monthly ranges for AI credit spend; a choice of model provider per workflow; and a model router that optimises for task type and difficulty.

It is available on github.com for GitHub Free, Team and Enterprise. Using the default Copilot CLI engine requires a Copilot license. GitHub quotes an Accenture manager who says one lead saved an estimated 29 hours a week and that AI now authors 91% of his team's commits. Those are Accenture's figures, not an independent study.

Why this matters

The design puts agents inside the pipeline teams already audit, rather than beside it. Before rollout, the control points are the ones to check: what each workflow is allowed to write, who reviews its safe outputs and what a month of runs is forecast to cost.
